Win a free iphone case - 3GS, 4 or 4S or ipod touch!

So, who is pre-ordering the new iphone? I just did! I usually wait a couple of weeks before upgrading, but this time I decided that, in light of the photosanity workshop and the fact that I teach iphone photography as part of it, this is a necessary business expense and couldn't possibly wait!

The good news is that iphone 4 cases will fit iphone 4S cases as well... kind of moot for me as I'm upgrading from a 3GS, but it did mean that I could also go ahead and order my new customized photo case from Uncommon. I love these cases, this will be my fourth - they are gorgeous, eye-catching and sturdy (yes, I have dropped my iphone a few times and it has been fine).

And I have decided, totally on the spur of the moment, to run a quick one day giveaway - like the nestingNYC facebook page and comment on the photo posted there of my new case by 11pm EDT tonight and be entered to win a gift card for the free Uncommon case of your choice (iphone 3GS, 4 or 4S or ipod touch).

Uncommon is a photosanity workshop sponsor, so fall participants get a special $5 discount off their order - sign up for the fall intro to photosanity workshop now (available for a special price at LivingSocial) to get access to this discount!

...not getting a box of chocolates! Yes, these are my Mother's Day chocolates and yes, I'm the kind of photographer who photographs her chocolates before eating them. But look how pretty they are!

It's hard to say that something is better than a box of chocolates, these absolutely delicious ones in particular, but I like to think my giveaway prizes are right up there with them...!

So without further ado, here are the winners!

Third prize, a $100 alethea cheng fitzpatrick photography gift certificate goes to... Stephanie!

Second prize, a $300 alethea cheng fitzpatrick photography gift certificate goes to... Faith!

And first prize, a $500 alethea cheng fitzpatrick photography gift certificate goes to... Eve!

In the interests of privacy, I haven't listed winners' last names but there were no other entrants with the same first names, and you have all been notified via e-mail as well. Congratulations - I look forward to working with you!

And thank you again to everyone who entered and donated. It was so much fun hearing from everyone, particularly those who left personal comments, so thank you for participating, and thank you for supporting Baby Basics NYC.

The one piece of advice every new parent needs

Everyone always has lots of advice for new parents - particularly before the baby is born I've found! I'm no exception. I think it's because we learn so much, especially the first time, but most people only get to apply that knowledge a handful of times, so we're desperate to pass that hard-earned knowledge on.

However, if I were to distill everything I've learned and read and experienced and talked to others about into one single piece of advice for new parents it would be...

TO JOIN A MOMS GROUP.

Or a dads group. Or a parents group. Or a "May Babies" group or playgroup or a support group or a discussion group or whatever it is called, but do it! Find a group for new parents with babies born around the time yours was and try it out. And if you don't like it, try another group. At least try it.

Seriously, my moms group has been the Best Thing Ever. A lot of people don't have such a thing, and I really don't know how they manage. I guess it's not for everyone, but for me, especially in the first few months, it was so incredibly helpful to meet and hang out with other mothers who were going through the same kinds of things I was. Yes, advice from more experienced parents is really helpful, but getting together with people who are "in the trenches" like you are gives a different kind of comfort. And then it becomes so fun to see all the babies grow and change!

Probably I was lucky to find a really great group. We stopped getting together quite as regularly once people started going back to work, often part time but on different schedules. However, there's a core group of us who still get together when we can, with whoever is around, and I still love it. Nowadays it's not so much for support and more for fun, but we still exchange information and share experiences and it continues to be something I'm really glad I have.

One of the reasons I liked the idea of Baby Basics NYC was because they provide the same kind of community and support that I was able to get for myself from my moms group and other events and resources that don't cost much, but if you're struggling to afford diapers, you certainly aren't going to spend your money on. The people who most need that support are not those who can afford it. And of course, no one should have to worry about being able to afford enough diapers.

If you haven't already, please make a donation to this organization, whether or not you enter the giveaway. And if you are planning on entering the giveaway, don't forget, tomorrow is the last day that you can!

Spring giveaway and fundraiser!

It's time to kick off the season for real, and I'm excited to do so with the first ever alethea cheng fitzpatrick photography spring giveaway and fundraiser! Find out all about it and fill out the entry form for your chance to win an alethea cheng fitzpatrick photography gift certificate for as much as $500!

I'm really excited about supporting Baby Basics NYC as well, especially after speaking with the organization's founder and several volunteers who were all really passionate about the benefits of the program, which provides support and education as well as diapers to poor working families in NYC. I'm looking forward to getting more involved with this organization in the upcoming months.

So what are you waiting for? Go and enter!

And if you're not in the market for photography services (I realize not everyone is - maybe you don't have kids or any other photography needs or are not in the area and don't have anyone you could give the gift certificate to) please consider donating to Baby Basics NYC anyway, and letting me know by notifying hello@aletheafitzpatrick.com when you make your donation. You can also help by spreading the word on your blog, facebook, twitter etc.

Thanks - I really appreciate it!
